Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The Nigerian film industry, particularly Kannywood, has been instrumental in influencing the perceptions and attitudes of society towards various social issues. The portrayal of gender roles in films is a crucial aspect of media, as it shapes viewers' understanding of masculinity, femininity, and the dynamics of gender relations. In Kannywood films, gender roles are often depicted in traditional, conservative ways, reflecting cultural and societal expectations. However, as Nigerian society undergoes changes, there is an increasing shift in how gender roles are portrayed, with films beginning to challenge traditional norms and stereotypes. Gombe South Local Government Area, Gombe State, where education is increasingly becoming accessible to young people, particularly university students, serves as an ideal context for examining the influence of Kannywood films on gender stereotypes. University students, who are in a crucial stage of identity formation, are highly susceptible to the messages conveyed by films and can be influenced by the way gender roles are presented in media. This study seeks to examine how Kannywood films impact gender stereotypes among university students, investigating whether these films reinforce traditional gender roles or challenge them, and how students respond to these portrayals.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Gender stereotypes in media, particularly in films, are a persistent issue that influences societal perceptions of men and women. Kannywood films, while reflecting the cultural values of Northern Nigeria, may perpetuate traditional gender stereotypes that limit the roles and opportunities available to women and reinforce patriarchal structures. In Gombe South Local Government Area, university students, who are exposed to a variety of media forms, may internalize these stereotypes, which could affect their attitudes towards gender equality and their personal perceptions of gender roles. While Kannywood films are a popular source of entertainment, their impact on gender stereotypes among university students has not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the ways in which Kannywood films influence gender stereotypes and how university students engage with these representations.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To assess the impact of Kannywood films on gender stereotypes among university students in Gombe South Local Government Area.

To explore the extent to which university students challenge or reinforce gender stereotypes after exposure to Kannywood films.

1.4 Research Questions

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will contribute to the understanding of the role that Kannywood films play in shaping the perceptions of gender among university students in Gombe South. By examining the impact of these films on gender stereotypes, the study will offer insights into how film can either perpetuate or challenge traditional gender norms. The findings will be valuable for filmmakers, educators, and policymakers in promoting gender equality and creating media content that fosters a more inclusive society.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on university students in Gombe South Local Government Area and examines the impact of Kannywood films on gender stereotypes. It does not extend to other regions or other forms of media. Limitations of the study may include biases in students’ self-reporting and the limited range of Kannywood films available for analysis in this particular geographical context.
